Live Cooking Experience..

In my little journey on May 8th, 2020, I took my colleagues to India via my virtual kitchen. In this post, I would like to share my experience and some of my colleagues experiences who joined me virtually on that day…

My daughter Riya, who was nicknamed by my colleagues as ‘CameraWomen’ was a great support throughout the entire session. During the dry run, we realized holding my phone to record the video was not easy. Think about holding for couple of hours without any shaking. We ordered a gimbal for the shooting!. Thanks to the colleagues for appreciating her! Yes, indeed it was a great job done by Riya.

Being a blogger, I want my pictures and video to have a decent lighting. Due to changing weather, natural lights was not assured all the time. So, we also used some studio lights to have a good lighting. This was a present from my hubby a couple of years back for my cooking videos. Starting a Youtube channel was a thought for several years. But I am still not sure if I can invest so much time and kept postponing. Not sure if this is beginning for that? But I hope at least I should update my blog post.:-)

To talk about spices, I had a lot of content in my mind about each spice. But I know this is not the session for that. Easily I could fill-up the entire time in talking about them. So I went as quickly as possible to move on, but at the same time to give minimal info about new spices that might be interesting for the audience. I also explained common herbs used in everyday cooking. When I was in the middle of the

I started with Butter Chicken, and continued with Spinach. I also showed how tempering is done in Indian cooking. Then I started rice and spent some time talking about tips and tricks for fluffy rice. Dessert and salad were continued. I tried to do multitasking a bit to make use of time efficiently. As it is a live session everyone’s stovetop cooking time will be different. So it is not the best way to carry everyone at the same speed. This is also learning for me. When I finished spice and herbs introduction it was already 20 min past. when I finally finished it was a total of 1.5 hours. Overall, I enjoyed the session very much and the experience gave me enough confidence to step into a new form of engaging with food enthusiasts.

All pictures and quotes in this post are from my colleagues and thanks to them for letting me share with you 🙂

Its good to see that my colleague’s kitchen is fully set with laptop to jump in to the session.

Beautiful to see all of ingredients prepared by my colleague as per instructions

Here are some of feedback from colleagues…..I would like to thank each one of you for joining me and wishing me by mail. I wish everyone great cooking and Guten Apetit!

” thank you so much for the great event. You are so brave to cook and present in front of so many people. Although I am not so fluent with the whole English/Indian cooking terminology, with the video I could follow the steps. It was great that you took the time to explain the spices and alternatives if some ingredient/utility is missing.

It was so delicious, my stomach is so full now I can only roll 😊. Also my family and my little kids (5 and 6 years old) enjoyed it and asked us if we can have the butter chicken more often – what would be a better way to say thank you.

“Hi Sridevi, it was really delicious. We couldn’t get enough of it – see what we did with the very last leftovers in the pan 🙂 Thanks again”

Good to see a different version of cooking! Baked chicken with Butter chicken sauce.

Hi Sridevi,

I just wanted to say a big thank you again for your awesome cooking session.

My husband and I cooked along and we never used so many spices and pans for one single dish before. With some preparation beforehand, we had no issues in following you (although you were sometimes quite fast due to your experience). Fortunately, we are living in Berlin, so we had no problems at all with buying all the spices and ingredients. And it never smelled so good in our flat before (at least not out of Christmas). Most of the times, I close the kitchen door while cooking, but this time, I opened it half way during our course to enjoy the smell even longer 😉

Thank you so much for all the detailed explanations, the amazing preparation and spice display in your kitchen and, of course, for sharing your soul food recipe with us in these difficult times. The butter chicken and the spinach were incredibly delicious. We want to cook the Banana Kheen and the salad another day, because it would have been way too much for the two of us.

Many greetings from Berlin and have a wonderful sunny weekend,

Hi Sridevi,

Thanks for the amazing session. I have learned a lot and my family and I really enjoyed our dinner 😊

Now, after some break, it’s time for the dessert.

Hi Sridevi,

that was such a wonderful cooking session today! I really enjoyed watching you, and I was deeply impression how professionally you’ve prepared the kitchen, how you’ve presented the ingredients, the different steps of the recipe, how you’ve explained things while heating up the pan etc. And a big “thank you” to your daughter for the professional job behind the camera.

I’ve done a lot of Indian cooking in the past, I love Indian food, I’m now pretty sure about my cooking plans for the weekend 😉

Thanks again, Sridevi, take care and stay healthy!

– It was a pleasure to follow along your cooking! It tasted great and my family liked it as well. For me it actually was the first time I enjoyed spinach 😉.
Best regards and keep it up,

Hi Sridevi,

Hi Sridevi,

thank you so much for this amazing cooking event on Friday!

I really enjoyed cooking together with all of you, besides I have learned a lot and the dishes turned out great!

I knew and had used most of the spices before, but tempering for example was completely new for me (I was mostly frying the spices with the oil during the beginning of the cooking and then added other ingredients on top successively). 😊

Thanks again for this truly fantastic event!

I hope we’ll get the chance to cook again someday together.

Stay safe & healthy!

Kind regards to you and your family,

Dear Sridevi,

I joined your live cooking with my children (16 and 18 years old). It was so great and we had so much fun.

The food was very yummy. Especially the butter chicken was very  tender and  absolutely finger-licking. As soon as  social distancing is over we will cook the dinner for our friends.

Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing your cooking experience with us. I guess it took much time to prepare.

Stay healthy and safe!

Warm regards,

Hi Sridevi,

Thank you so much for the cooking session last week!

I haven’t been able to participate in the live session on Friday, but I followed the recording on Saturday. Together with my wife we cooked the butter chicken and the coconut milk spinach. My wife is very much into Indian food, but we both agree that this has been the best Indian dish we’ve ever had. And we very much appreciated the tips and tricks as well as the background information that you have given.

Many thanks,

I have picked up only some of the pictures and comments. Thanks to all who have shared it with me.

What more can you expect out of a cooking session! I am happy that I have inspired some of you to cook Indian food and happy to see different versions.

Every act has a beginning and an end. But for diverse cuisine like Indian cuisine there is a beginning for learning and experiencing it but without an ending. It is a journey and I hope that I have started this journey for at least some of them…

I hope in future I could add more recipes from my kitchen to yours:-)
