Garden To Table Series- Introduction
When we heard in news that COVID19 has reached Europe and Italy as its epicentre, we felt that being healthy and developing good immune system is the only way to fight against this new enemy.
With all the negativity around Corona, everyone needs something that makes them feel happy. Many of us are doing something new that has been added to our routine. Like Sports, dieting, handicrafts, art, reading books, music, dance etc..or learning new recipes and cooking. I hope you agree with me. Don’t you feel happy when you learn something new and practice it? So, which hobby that you have started or restarted in this season?
I started with an idea of growing our own veggies in garden and balcony. This post is about introducing the series, ‘Garden to Table’, where I want to write about my experiences in growing fresh produce at home in a sustainable way . Yes, growing your own food as much as possible.
I got interested in Gardening not only because of COVID, Gardening is an inspiration from my father. I normally start flower garden every spring season, and this year I started with Veggies.
Usually, when they transport veggies from one country to another, it takes long time to reach our kitchen and they sometimes loose some of its nutritional value. How fresh they are harvested and cooked, veggies has a good source of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. This is my little Sustainability practice that I started end of February. I started with few seeds from my kitchen. I ordered some pots and soil from online. Slowly, we increased the varieties of plants. Hubby was taking care of basic setup in preparing the garden, while I prepared the balcony. Riya helped in watering the plants. Step by step, we added new pots and plants.
I used some of egg trays and paper cups for germinating seeds. Due to changing weather in germany some seeds took long time to germinate and most of them loved my kitchen windows – perfect warmth, light and my constant attention while I am cooking:-). After successful germination, I transported the seedlings to a pot. I also got few saplings from nursery.
I had an initial impression that, its not worth the effort of watering and maintaining the plants while we can easily afford it from the nearby market. As all gardeners say, I am also impressed with the first harvest of my Salad with its freshness and taste.
In this series, I will add some recipes with fresh harvest from my garden.
Beleive me, you should try it to have the feel. The joy when you see your first seed germinate with nature’s magic and first harvest….It is one of amazing thing. If you like to start, you can start small with few pots and when you can, you could gradually increase the number of pots and veggies. Other way is to pick one of your favorite veggie or herb and plant it to your garden. So which is your Favorite veggie or herb? If you are alreading growing your own food, I would also like to get some tips from you.
Looking forward to how the series turns out! Keep watching 🙂
